  I am Glenys Woods and I live in Victoria born in Perth married 38 years. I have one son Stuart and husband Colin. Colin born in Victoria lived here all his life. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2010 15 months ago having a lumpectomy which wasn't enough to go by. Having this surgery on the 4th of August 2010 I thought I was Ok to keep my breast. The doctors said that it wasn't enough. I had a mastectomy on the 13th of October 2010 and was in hospital to the 20th of October having the tube taken from me. Having the 7 draingages I felt I had enough. My grief is currently high around 7 our of ten. The support groups have been good at airport west in Melbourne. Having a forum in Melton was a experience for me as I learnt a lot from the emotions that all woman have as it is so commonly with all women. I have had a good result from all of this as I haven't had kemo or radiation but on hormone treatment. Having a good result physically and getting off it lightly people say to me get on with it. I feel with this they haven't gone through the surgery and don't realise the consequences. This annoys me a lot as when they go through as I hope they have the same result they will realise it.

  Hi Glenys - what a great name you have!!
  Welcome to the click! We've just completed our 'click chat' session for this week - hope you'll be able to join the next one (may be next Wed). Sounds like you're not having an easy time of things - you are so very right in saying many women in the same situation feel the same! Especially at the time when all the surgery and treatments 'wind down' and you keep hoping and waiting for life to 'get back to normal'! I do hope the groups you've joined are helping!
  You do still have high levels of stress from the score you've given - have you seen (or are you seeing) a counsellor or other support person? There are some very good supportive counsellors you can see for little to no cost - the Cancer Council could give you more information (ph: 13 11 20). There is a booklet titled "Cancer - how are you travelling?" (have you seen it?) which is very useful to help identify where the main concerns may be - you can download a copy from the 'Cancer Australia' website (or just google the title).
  Hope to chat soon (we'll have to be careful not to get confused with names though - we even spell the same!!).

  Ahhh another Glenys. Hello and welcome to you Glenys. Yes this can be a lonely journey at times but its good to know there are sites like this, groups, and counselling available to us for as long as it takes. Good grief - 7 drains!! I was miserable with 3 so can only imagine what the healing time was like for you. I hope you manage to join our chat one Wed and get some encouragement from the various women who contribute to this site. :) Sue x

  Sue, I think Glenys means she had to have 7 drainages, i.e. go back to the doctor or nurse and have a 'needle' drainage of fluid built up at the surgery site (called 'seroma' fluid) on seven occasions. This type of fluid collection is not uncommon after mastectomy surgery. It is not usually painful or difficult to remove the fluid, but is a nuisance to keep going back to doctor and can be quite uncomfortable when the fluid builds up. It does settle over time ...
